One day, one country, one color – Koningsdag is pure state of exception. When the Netherlands dress in orange, beats pulse through the streets and flea markets, festivals and parties flow seamlessly into one another, one thing is clear: this isn’t just a celebration, it’s a way of life. But what’s actually behind all this Oranje madness? Before we dive into music, sound and festival highlights, let’s take a quick look at the history behind the country’s biggest public holiday – and why Koningsdag is so much more than just good vibes and loud speakers.
So why do we actually celebrate Koningsdag?
Koningsdag is more than just orange outfits, music and good vibes – it has real tradition. It celebrates the birthday of Dutch King Willem-Alexander, which takes place every year on April 27. Since 2014, this day has been an official national holiday in the Netherlands and a symbol of togetherness, joie de vivre and a little collective state of exception.
Its roots go back to 1889, when the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina was celebrated for the first time – back then known as Princess Day. Even then, the goal was to strengthen national unity and create a shared celebration for everyone. Princess Day later became Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day) and eventually today’s Koningsdag, named after the reigning king.
And why is everything orange? Simple: orange is the color of the Dutch royal house of Orange-Nassau. On Koningsdag, the entire country shows its colors – with outfits, decorations, boats, balconies and, of course, loads of music. Whether it’s a flea market in the morning, a festival in the afternoon or a party until late at night: Koningsdag is the one day of the year when all of Holland turns into the biggest open-air festival in Europe.
