A speaker like the IKONIO takes more than just a great idea on paper. Its development is shaped by countless decisions, discussions and listening sessions. Senior Acoustic Engineer Massimo takes us behind the scenes to reveal how a bold concept evolved into a speaker with a character all its own.

The Vision: From Powerful Sound to Subtle Detail

Teufel Blog: Massimo, what was your vision for the sound of IKONIO when the project first started?

Massimo: We imagined a powerful, immersive sound, capable of conveying the full spectrum of emotions within a musical track, even the most subtle nuances. It had to be dynamic and impactful, embracing the complete audio range: from those depths you can feel in your chest, up to the finest details, allowing the speaker to eventually disappear and let the music speak for itself.

IKONIO: A distinctive, sculptural design

Traditionally, these qualities would require a large and bulky audio system that takes up a lot of space in a room. Instead, we wanted our customers to enjoy the same intense experience through a compact all-in-one speaker, capable of integrating beautifully into a living room and featuring a unique, sculptural design.

These ambitions led to a years-long research and development journey, bringing together passionate engineers and designers to overcome complex technical challenges and translate the initial idea into a tangible product.

The Challenge: Delivering Deep Bass in a Compact Space

Teufel Blog: Which acoustic challenge was the most demanding during the development of IKONIO, and how did you overcome it?

Massimo: Without question, the bass. We wanted IKONIO to reach below 20 Hz and play at very high levels, but the enclosure has a particularly small internal volume. Producing deep bass means moving a lot of air and doing that in such a compact box generates enormous pressure, strong mechanical forces, and requires a huge amount of power from the amplifier.

Our solution was to develop two very special eight-inch woofers, capable of high linear excursion and exceptional power handling. As bass radiates omnidirectionally, the woofers’ position can be chosen with considerable freedom; therefore, we arranged them in a force-balanced configuration, with one firing upward and the other downward. Thanks to their opposing motion, the mechanical forces cancel out, thereby keeping the cabinet stable and minimising unwanted vibrations.

We decided on a sealed-box concept to prioritize deep bass extension and transient accuracy. The mechanical design played a major role here, as the enclosure had to withstand extremely high internal pressure while remaining practical to manufacture and assemble.

The power section was equally demanding: achieving the target performance required a peak power of more than one thousand watts per woofer channel, which meant that the amplifier platform had to be designed specifically for our application. Sophisticated dynamic processing allowed us to ensure perfectly consistent behaviour at all listening levels.

Overall, it took countless iterations, as mechanics, electronics, and signal processing had to be developed in synergy and progressively optimised. Yet when you experience that deep, pervasive bass emerging from such a compact enclosure, you realise why the effort was worth it.

Eight Drivers, Three Sound Modes, and Endless Soundscapes

Teufel Blog: The IKONIO features an unusual acoustic setup. What role do the individual drivers play, and how do they work together to create the overall listening experience?

Massimo: IKONIO is a fully active three-way system with eight custom-designed drivers: two woofers, three midrange drivers, and three tweeters. Each driver has a clearly defined role, but the distinctive character of IKONIO comes from the way they work together as one coherent whole.

The woofers provide the low-frequency foundation: they are responsible not only for the remarkable bass extension, but also for the physical impact and effortless dynamics that make the speaker feel much larger than it is. The midrange drivers are crucial because this is where so much of the music lives, especially voices and acoustic instruments. The tweeters handle the upper frequencies, delivering detail, clarity and openness.

What makes the system quite unique is how the midrange drivers and tweeters are arranged across the front and sides of the housing. Their placement is the result of in-depth simulation and prototyping. Since each driver has independent amplification and signal processing, we can precisely adjust its level, timing and phase. This turns the midrange and tweeter section into a highly flexible acoustic array: in other words, IKONIO can completely reshape the way it projects sound into the room, depending on the selected listening mode.

In Immersive mode, the array creates a wide, spacious presentation with precise stereo rendering from a single speaker. In Omnidirectional mode, it distributes sound uniformly throughout the room, which is ideal when people are moving around, for example during a party. In Mono reference mode, it provides the focused pattern of a conventional mono loudspeaker.

Importantly, all of this is achieved within a pure three-way architecture, because we did not want to compromise sound quality by employing full-range drivers or hybrid solutions commonly used for spatial effects.

The fine-tuning process was particularly intense, as each sound mode and the stereo-paired configuration had to be optimised individually, with extensive measurements and listening sessions. This attention to detail allows IKONIO to consistently deliver the accuracy, resolution and musicality expected from a high-end loudspeaker. At the same time, it can play much louder than its size would suggest, with very low distortion.

A Soundstage Without Limits

Teufel Blog: What is the first thing a listener will notice that makes IKONIO sound different from a conventional loudspeaker?

Massimo: I believe the most distinctive feature is the sense of space and acoustical depth that IKONIO can create. As a single speaker in Immersive mode, it offers a surprisingly wide, three-dimensional and natural image, expanding well beyond the physical boundaries of the product. When used as a stereo pair, the effect becomes holographic: all audio elements in the track are projected into their original positions with great precision, across a voluminous, lifelike soundstage.

I am also convinced that listeners will be impressed by the power of the bass, which can not only be heard but also physically felt, providing a level of sonic immersion that is rare among speakers in this category.

The Moment It All Came Together

Teufel Blog: If you could name just one aspect, what makes you particularly proud of IKONIO?

Massimo: What makes me most proud is the level of integration we achieved, and the incredible teamwork that made it possible. There is a remarkable amount of innovative technology inside IKONIO, and it had to be packed into a very compact space. While it is relatively easy to optimize one component in isolation, the challenge is bringing together the various domains – acoustics, mechanics, electronics, thermal behaviour, user experience – so that the final product works smoothly and is effortless to use.

IKONIO is the result of a truly collaborative process. I was impressed by the team’s creativity, persistence and problem-solving attitude throughout the project. Seeing all that expertise and care come together in the final product is especially rewarding.
