What exactly is Cradle to Cradle?
To put it simply: Cradle to Cradle pursues the approach of manufacturing products in such a way that they do not end up in the trash, but remain completely within the cycle. Either the materials are returned to nature or they are technologically repurposed without any loss of value.
The foundational idea is that:
- Materials circulate in closed loops
- Production is accomplished with renewable energy
- Diversity is valued ecologically, culturally and socially
- The result is products that are not only less harmful but also actively beneficial
The approach was developed in the late 1990s by German chemist Michael Braungart and American architect William McDonough and made known worldwide through their book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things.
From Vision to Implementation: Who Awards the Cradle to Cradle Seal?
Clear rules are needed to turn good ideas into real impact. That’s exactly what the Cradle to Cradle Certified® seal, which is awarded by the independent Cradle to Cradle Institute in the USA, is for. Together with external testing agencies, each product is evaluated according to fixed standards – currently version 4.0 is used, but the MYND is certified according to the even more recent 4.1 standard.
Important: The seal is not a one-time award to be placed on the shelf; you have to regularly demonstrate that you meet the requirements and are improving. Cradle to Cradle therefore means not only “certified,” but also “keep at it and continue to develop.”
